New Paintings
Sep 11 - Oct 9, 1998
Starting September 11, the George Adams Gallery will have on view a show of new paintings byAndrew Lenaghan in the main exhibition space and an overview of porcelain sculptures from 1968 through 1998 by Richard Shaw in the small gallery.
The Lenaghan exhibition, his third since joining the gallery in 1995, will feature new paintings of Brooklyn (the Gowanus Canal and the Brooklyn waterfront) as well as a series of paintings made this past spring while on a road trip from New York to Key West and back (views of Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Florida and Georgia).
Lenaghan typically works on a small-scale (5 x 8 inches up to 15 x 18 inches), which enables him to work directly from life and complete a painting in two or three days (one to sketch out the scene and another day, sometimes two, to complete the painting). His favorite subjects typically are found in his Brooklyn neighborhood - 4th Avenue, the Gowanus Canal and New York Harbor. This past year, however, he undertook the trip South to see how it would affect his work; he returned with an accomplished body of work documenting the roadsides of the Southeast, for example, a view of Pittsburgh, abandoned construction equipment in Kentucky, truck stops on Interstate 85, and a blast furnace in Birmingham.
