Now on view at the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA, is their comprehensive exhibition, The Candy Store: Funk, Nut, and Other Art with a Kick, mounted in conjunction with a related exhibition at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, University of California, Davis.
This exhibition - one of the largest to date celebrating McHugh’s legacy and, notably, the second hosted by the Crocker (the first took place Winter of 1981) - is held on what would have been the 60th anniversary of the gallery’s founding in 1962. Many of the works included, by artists such as Robert Arneson, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Clayton Bailey, Roy De Forest, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt and Sandra Shannonhouse, among many others, are now part of the museum’s permanent collection, and were originally exhibited at or acquired directly from the Candy Store gallery in its heyday.
The Candy Store is on view at the Crocker Art Museum through May 1, 2022.
