We’re delighted to see paintings by Katherine Sherwood included in Body Politics at the Torrance Art Museum in Torrance, CA.
The exhibition presents work that brings attention to the disabled body and examines the various ‘gazes’ by which it is represented and interpreted. Sherwood's Venus paintings revisit the classical nude and picture proud people with disabilities using prosthetics. Painted on the backs of found art history posters that are quilted together, these works allude to the lack of representation of disabled people in the Western canon. Also included are Panteha Abareshi, Emily Barker, Yadira Dockstader, Mari Katayama, and Liz Young.
The exhibition will be on view through September 9, 2023.
