Katherine Sherwood, Green Butterflies (after MSM), 2020. Mixed media on found cotton, 18 x 14 inches.

Several of Katherine Sherwood's Brain Flower paintings are included in the four-part exhibition, Symbiosis at the Berkshire Botanical Garden, Stockbridge, MA, curated by Beth Rudin DeWoody.

Symbiosis is organized around the theme of interconnectivity, whether between two natural species or between art and botany, with works displayed in both indoor galleries and outdoor gardens. Sherwood is represented by two paintings from her ongoing Brain Flower series, both based on compositions by the Swiss illustrator and naturalist Maria Sybilla Merian with collaged elements of Sherwood's own brain scans. In each, butterflies flutter around depictions of flowering plants.

Symbiosis is on view at the Berkshire Botanical Garden through September 11, 2022.
