Through August 6th, The George Adams Gallery will have on view A Show of Hands, an invitational group exhibition of paintings, sculpture, drawings and photographs incorporating the image of one or more hands. A Show of Hands, includes paintings by Arnold, Barsness, Beal, Celaya, McFarlane, and Saul; drawings by Arneson, Bedia, Marks, Stashkevetch, Straus, Valerio and Winters; photographs by Neshat and Schneider; and sculpture by Dill and Leopold. The works in the exhibition by Arnold, Barsness, Celaya, Marks, McFarlane, Saul, and Winters were made specifically for the exhibition. In works such as China Marks' A Hand of Cards, the clasped hands in Neshat's Faith, or Maffucci Syndrome, a drawing a newborn's deformed hand by Stashkevetch, the hand is isolated as the central motif. In other works, such as Arneson's Lousing up the Space, Saul's Lunch, or Valerio's Fear it is the gesture of the hand the activates the narrative. In Susan Leopold's sculpture a series of hands covers the outside of the box; inside is a view of the walls of a palace fort in Jodhpur showing the impressions, cast and mounted on the walls of the hands of women who perished on their husband's funeral pyres in the ritual of Sati from which the piece takes it's title.
