Material Witness-New Paintings |

Mar 12 - Apr 3, 1999 | |
During March, The George Adams Gallery will exhibit new paintings by Chester Arnold. The exhibition consists of a new series of paintings, inspired by the experience of cleaning out his garage in Sonoma, California, titled Material Witness. This will be Chester Arnold's second one-man exhibition at the gallery. The paintings in the exhibition are all close-up views of the detritus of a lifetime: heaps of discarded items that mark the various stages of life from childhood to adulthood and old age. For example, among the images in The Painter's Life, 1999 are a ladder, an old shoe, a bicycle tire, a broken icebox, odd bits of plumbing, and an artist's palette. The pile in Arrivals and Departures, 1999, fills the entire canvas and includes , among other things, a doll, a cane, a bathtub, a statue of Jesus, a flag and flagpole; in the middle of it all is the artist himself rendering it all on canvas. Clearing, 1999, on the other hand, depicts the vast hole in the ground that is the ultimate destination for all these discards. Exhibition Checklist Clockwise from the right: 1.
