Notes from the Underground: An Invitational Exhibition

Dec 4 - Jan 11, 1985

On December 14th, the Frumkin Gallery will open an invitational exhibition, Notes from the Underground. The exhibition will feature nine artists and will include a large-scale floor to wall installation and several wall-sized paintings. The artists included are: Luis Cruz Azaceta, Richard Bosman, Sue Coe, Peter Drake, Larry Edwards, Arthur Gonzalez, Paul Marcus, Mark Mulhern and Dan Rice.

The theme united the works is "alienation," and each piece deals with the theme as either a state of mind of a state of being. For example, Paul Marcus' diptych panel of illegal aliens in an underground sewer and Sue Coe's Let them Eat Cake, a collaged commentary on President Reagan's social policies, are about being alienated from society. On the other hand, Peter Drake's large ink drawing of an isolated figure half submerged in a raging sea and Luis Cruz Azaceta's triptych Purgatorium, inspired by half-human scavengers seen on city streets, interpret the theme as mental alienation.

Other works in the show include Dan Rice's large Bosch-like Eternal Rest and Larry Edwards' painting inspired by James Ensor. Arthur Gonzalez has contributed an installation of ceramic figures, Mark Mulhern, a painting of dreams and nightmares and Richard Bosman, a scene of the criminal underground.

The artists in the exhibition range from the unknown to the familiar in New York. Mark Mulhern, who exhibits in Chicago, will be making his New York debut. Larry Edwards was included in a group show at the Alternative Museum last year and Dan rice did a special project at PS 1 last winter. Sue Coe, Peter Drake, Arthur Gonzalez, and Paul Marcus have all shown recently in the East Village and Luis Cruz Azaceta and Richard Bosman have been showing on 57th Street for many years.

Notes from the Undergroud will run from December 14th through January 11th. The Frumkin Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday, 10 to 6 and Saturdays 12 to 5:30.
